I am knee-deep in New Year’s Eve party preparations, and yet I totally have Valentine’s Day on the brain. Every spare minute I’ve had for the past two days has been spent making heart-themed pillows for the bench in our upstairs hallway.
It all started while going through Little Cutie’s closet and discovering two sweaters that were favorites of mine are officially way too small {I’m putting in my formal request here and now that she please slow down her constant growth in the new year}. So I turned them into little throw pillows. Now I definitely feel like I got my money’s worth since both Cuties wore these for two years each, and the black and white striped one was a couple of dollars on the clearance rack at Gymboree and the hot pink one was from the Lilly Pulitzer warehouse sale for $15!
After I made those, Big Cutie and I sorted through my large ribbon scrap jar and pulled out all the red and pink pieces. We played around with them for a bit and came up with this design and I simply sewed them down {I realize that one wide red ribbon is a bit wonky, but I’m going to try and stop thinking about it ever 2.3 seconds and deal}. I did follow an online tutorial and made my first ever envelope flap pillow cover so I can store this easily and use the insert for other occasions {the fact that I just figured this out now at almost 40 should tell you what a novice sewer I truly am!}.
Since I was in a “using up” kind of mood, I remembered that my last large bag of rhinestones came with a ridiculously high number of red ones so I came up with the idea to make a heart out of different colored and sized rhinestones. First, I just cut a heart out of a piece of cardstock and pinned it to my piece of felt.
Then I just glue gunned rhinestones inside the heart template until it was filled in and then sewed up the cover.
And the last pillow was just a basic applique from letters I printed off my laptop. With a crooked ‘e.’ WAAAAHH. I carefully pinned each letter to the fabric and sewed nice and slowly, however inbetween each letter, I kept running back and forth to the kitchen where Cute Husband and The Cuties were making donuts. Somewhere between all that careful pinning and donut sampling the ‘e’ slipped I guess. But I’m leaving it. It’s not something I’m selling in my shop and it’s not a gift for someone else. It’s a lousy Valentine’s Day decoration and it’s just going to have to be good enough {doesn’t that sound like a Saturday Night Live Stuart Smalley segment?}.
And finally, here’s all of them together as a happy little family. Fun fact: the puppy keeps stealing the sweater pillows. She must still smell Little Cutie on them.
Love it! You could make a little heart or a B and put it in the corner by the E? So that it distracts the eye from the booboo?? maybe?? Love the bench, where is it from? I’m looking for something for my entryway. Doubt that would fit, but I love it ! 😦
The bench is from Ballard Designs a few years ago.
so, so pretty! would love for you to link-up at crafty saturday at http://tosewwithlove.blogspot.com/2011/01/crafty-saturday-party-link-up-no1.html
These are SO cute! What a fun way to decorate for the holiday!! Love the mix of pattern and texture.
Those are so stinkin’ cute! My daughter is into making pillows out of felt lately so I’ll have to show this to her.
The way my kids wear their clothes, though, there’d be no way I’d be able to make a cute pillow out of any of their sweaters. Their clothes are fit for no more than rags by the time they grow out of them. They play hard!
Adorable!!!!! Love those pillows. Now that’s creative!
Those are so cute, and the colors are just so vivid. Nice job!
I adore the bling one and the Love one. SUPER CUTE! Please come by CraftOManiac this evening around 6:00 and link these up to my Link Party. Have a great day. Jen
those are all adorable! i especially love the rhinestones one- awesome!
What cute pillows you’ve made! I like them all!
Be a sweetie,
Shelia 😉
You have a great eye. I love the combinations here. I can’t believe its time to already think about Valentines day. 🙂
oooooh, I LOVE them ! Hmmm, I’ll be going through my sweaters with a new eye….

what a great way to reuse the sweaters from your kids! I think they turned out just lovely and look fabulous on your bench, well done!
These are soooooooo cute. I have to make some for myself. When I took down christmas, valentines went up, but I do not have any pillows. Thanks for the inspiration.
Super-cute pillows! And I like the “e” crooked, it adds character! Also love the idea of repurposing your kids clothes. I cut up all my kids baby clothes to make a quilt but I still didn’t get to it and the youngest is in college…
OH.MY.GOODNESS! Those could NOT be any cuter! LOVE!! Seriously. LOVE!!
Flat-out fabulous!
I would be honored to have you add it to my blog party

Those are all adorable! I love them all. Thanks for the inspiration and you should link them up to my party tomorrow over at nightowlcrafting.blogspot.com.
I think the grouping is totally adorable. So much so that I wish I had a little black bench in my house to pile high with all the cute red and pink. As for the “wonky” ribbon and letter, maybe you could add an additional detail on top of the ribbon (or like you said, try not to worry – I wouldn’t!). And for the letter, I some times make things crooked so that I don’t have try to keep everything straight and pretty. I like ’em both and would easily put them in my house. I need to learn how to sew better so I can TRY these! 🙂 I think my daughter would love ’em too.
Hi!! This is way cute!! I am highlighting you on my top 10 V-day crafts thus far!

I love your pillows! How festive!
Now that is a cute pillow arrangement. I love all the variety of textures too. I recently made some nice tan, cream, and brown “up-cycled” sweater pillows that looked all cozy, but I like how this bright pink one looks–much more pizazz. 🙂 all are super cute together. We’re your newest follower!

Alisha this is fantastic! Thanks for linking! I’ll be featuring this tutorial on BCD on Jan. 20th! Thanks for sharing!

These are quite possibly the cutest things I’ve ever seen – WOW! Adorable!
Thanks, Stacy!
I love, love, love all the pillows and am copying every one! And I am going to make the “e” crooked! I thought you did it on purpose! I would not have noticed the “wonky” ribbon if you had not pointed it out! Super cute!!!
I love your pillows, especially all together! Thanks for the inspiration!
Found you on Show and Tell at My Romantic Home. I absolutely LOVE these whimsical cushions. You’ve inspired me to dust off my sewing machine, and upcycle the many Gymboree sweaters in my DD’s closet! Great job!
Love these! I was kind of looking for some Valentine’s pillows while out and about today and yours are SO MUCH cuter than anything else I saw (and thankfully didn’t buy) and if you hadn’t said anything, I would have thought that the “e” was crooked on purpose! Thanks for the heart-felt (yeah – go ahead and groan ’cause I meant that pun) inspiration!

Marie ~ I’ve tried before as I LOVE your website, and can’t get my project to upload! Any help would be appreciated.
Your valentine pillows are so pretty! The crooked E gives the pillow character!
It’s definitely good enough! The “e” gives it character and whimsy. I think you totally meant to do it. 😉 And donuts—how could you not supervise those? I would help taste-test, personally. Thanks for sharing your wonderful creations! Did you enter my “our nest” sign giveaway? I hope you can! alittleknickknack.blogspot.com

YOU HAVE BEEN FEATURED AT CRAFTOMANIAC!!! THANKS A BUNCH jen
Thanks, Jen!
Love them! I saw this on craftomaniac’s Monday blog and went that afternoon to Joann’s and bought things I needed to make them. I also made some “wintry” ones from white and blue felt to use for January first. That way I can display those while I make the V-day ones next. Thanks for the idea! can’t wait to see what is next!
I have to just say, I LOVE THESE PILLOWS! And all your little ‘mistakes’ makes them that much better!!!! I just came across your picture that was posted @ {my little lovely blog}. I’m so glad I found this post…it definitely has put V-day on my mind! Please come on over and check out my Interior Design & Decor website, SAS Interiors @ http://www.sasinteriors.blogspot.com

I absolutely love the pillows, especially the pillow with the supposedly crooked “e”. If you hadn’t said it was a mistake I would’ve thought you were making a statement. Like that even though love isn’t always perfect it’s worth it. It’s quirky and cute and fabulous! Great job!!!! And now I’m dying to make pillows tomorrow.
These are amazing! I think this is one of your best projects to date! Thanks so much for linking on Craft Schooling Sunday, great to have you and look forward to seeing you again!
Way to upcycle Lil Cutie’s old sweaters…
These are stunning.
Thanks for linking up to Creative Juice Thursday!

Very cute!! I like that you also have a “keepsake” from your girls’ toddler years.
I LURVE these! I am NOT a sewer, but surely I could do a square!!! I would like to repost on my blog if you dont mind! I will link back to you! 🙂 Let me know, thanks!!!
I’m a VERY beginner sewer, so if I can do these, ANYONE can, I promise ~ give it a try! And feel free to repost {and I’d love to see what you come up with! :)}
I love your pillows! so adorable! Your light pink pillow with trim is similar to one I just did I tutorial on too. Loving it!

OMG! These are the cutest pillow’s I’ve ever scene!!! I absolutely LOVE them! You’ve inspired me to want to make some!
I love those! I have an old church pew in my mudroom and have always wanted to fill it with seasonal pillows…guess I should learn how to use my sewing machine. Thanks for the inspiration, I will put these in the “learn how to sew in order to make these” file.
Actually, the crooked “e” looks just right. Love is often a little crooked in the end.
These are SO very cute! I love the crooked little “e”! I thought you did that on purpose to give it a modern little punch!
I LOVE your crooked ‘e’! I think it adds character and real life to your sweet bench. Thanks for sharing your brilliance!

I like the bright fun colors you used for your pillows. I wouldn’t worry about the E on the the love pillow. Love isn’t always perfect but it’s still awesome. So’s your pillow.
Did you buy pre-made pillows? If not, what did you stuff them with, and did you just cover the ones w/rinestones, letters, etc in felt?
Can’t WAIT to do this w/my little boy’s clothes that are too small!!
Some were craft store pillow forms and some I just used poly fill. All of them are made with either recycled sweaters or felt off the bolt.
Adorable!
love them!!
and I love the “e” askew.. hand crafted isn’t supposed to look factory made 😀
I love all of these pillows. They are so much fun.
So cute! I’m attempting my first envelope pillow cover today. I think I’ll be more inclined to decorate with pillows if they have cute removable covers I can switch out.
I love how you used scraps and repurposed sweaters to make these pillows. They are all adorable and very creative!
