Be My Valentine Headbands

I know it’s still January but I love Valentine crafts so much that as soon as we cross into the 30-day window before the holiday I give myself permission to start going crazy {there’s my new idea for an HGTV show: Crafting Moms Gone Wild ~ not quite the same mass appeal as Spring Break college girls, but I know I’d buy the DVD}.

I actually haven’t made The Cuties proper Valentine headbands before ~ such a shondah! {that’s today’s Yiddish lesson, meaning a shame or pity :-) }.  And I wasn’t a good blogger as far as taking pictures as I went, but I’ll give you the play-by-play as best I can!

First, I cut out hearts {the easiest way to cut hearts is always to fold your felt in half and cut half ~ always cut deeper into the center of the top of the heart than you think you need to for a prettier heart shape!}.  Then I sewed the layers together with contrasting embroidery floss in small straight stitches and then added a second layer to the back {to cover my mess!} and sewed this with a blanket stitch {this is a good tutorial on how to do a blanket stitch if you’ve never done one before}.  On the larger heart, I added a button I made with a covered button kit.

{I was inspired by these ornaments which also have a great tutorial}

Once these were finished, I glued each of them to a red Goody headband from Target. Whenever you glue something to a headband, it’s a good idea to back it with a piece of felt or fabric for stability.  Simply cut a piece a little smaller than your featured item {I like to use pinking shears for a more finished look} and then hot glue it over the back side of the headband}.

Little Cutie was willing to immediately model it for me.  A sure sign of approval.  That or she just wanted to show off her new shirt that says “I <3 Being Fabulous” for you.

Big Cutie was also a willing participant in modeling her new headband.

She too, happened to be wearing a shirt from my rare foray into the Forever 21 kids’ department.  Perhaps I have stumbled into an interesting new form of blogger child manipulation….

    I definitely understand your staring so early with the Valentine headbands. i sent our grandchildren their Valentine Day cards about 1 week ago, thinking that we were in Feb and not Jan. I didn’t realize this mistake until E said, “Nanny , you aren’t hte only crazy grandmother. Reiley’s grandmother also sent her a Valentine day card” i guess that this is grandmother thing.

    The headbands are very cute and the girls look great.

    Love,
    Shelli
